Online tutoring and mentoring for high school students

Finding school a bit tough?

Work with a QUALIFIED, EXPERIENCED tutor to figure out why

Create a plan to get where you want to go

Tutoring available wherever you want to learn, no travel time.

Traditional tutoring requires you to travel to meet the tutor, or the tutor to travel to meet you. The tutor will need to pass their rent or transport costs on to you.

Big Picture Tutoring saves you time and money, and makes organising your tutoring a breeze.

With the online portal you can log in any time to check your upcoming classes, review notes from previous sessions, pay invoices with a couple of clicks – even reschedule classes if necessary.

Online collaboration is an important part of the future of education and work, and online tutoring gives you a leg up in mastering these skills.

Big Picture Tutoring seamlessly integrates digital skills into tutoring sessions, making sessions more efficient and organised and giving you control of your own learning.

Assignments can be loaded directly into the classroom, worked on, saved and returned to the next week. You can do internet research and work on documents collaboratively with me, draw pictures, plot graphs, and watch videos.

Big Picture Tutoring lets you work in your own space, wherever you feel most comfortable.

The powerful, user-friendly virtual classroom means we can chat easily face-to-face. Online conversations are natural, and the interactive features are intuitive.

Students are tutored individually so that we have time to really get to know each other, and I communicate regularly with parents. This is vital to the success of tutoring.

Online tutoring has lots of advantages, but I never thought  keeping people safe during a global pandemic would be one. Right now not having a stranger in your home or your child in a crowded tutoring centre brings peace of mind.

If you’d like to see how I deal with other risks of working with children please read my Child Safe Policy

About

My name is Olis, I am a qualified teacher and an experienced online tutor and mentor.  I work 1-on-1 with students from Year 7 to Year 12 in maths, English, and humanities subjects.

I am based in Melbourne and have lots of Victorian students, but I also teach students in Queensland and NSW (and would love to work with people from other states).

Why have I called my business Big Picture Tutoring?

In a rapidly changing world it is difficult to predict what the future holds for today’s students. Big picture skills like creativity and critical thinking are likely to be essential, and this is what I concentrate on at Big Picture Tutoring. I seek to help students better understand themselves and the world around them, and develop practical and emotional life skills.

I focus on why students are learning what they’re learning, helping them to develop their own understanding and grasp underlying principles.

As well as supporting students to accomplish their educational goals, I help develop skills and interests that will be of value for the rest of their lives.

FAQ

I teach maths, English, and humanities subjects through to VCE/QCE/HSC.  I also provide specialist support for essay writing, and for students undertaking Independent Investigation.

There are two options:*

$101 if you pay for each session as you go

$94 if you pay for the whole term.

Each class goes for 1 hour, once a week.  All classes are prepaid.

*If you are struggling financially please let me know, I do offer slidng scale prices for those who need it.

I work 1-on-1 with students, although in some circumstances there may be two students in a class.

I am a qualified teacher, registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. I have undergraduate degrees in Arts and Science (High Distinction average and Honours), and am currently working on a PhD. I have 7 years experience as a tutor, as well as a range of experience in secondary, tertiary and adult education.

Never, I don’t engage in plagiarism.  I help you learn so that you can do the work yourself.

You’ll need:

1) A computer with a webcam.

The classroom is compatible with Windows Vista/7/8/10, MacOS, Linux and Chrome OS (Chromebooks).  (It also runs on iOS and Android phones and tablets, but I recommend using a computer).

You can use most browsers but Firefox and Chrome work best.

2) A reliable internet connection, with at least 1024kbps download speed and 512kbps upload speed (you can check your bandwidth here).

3) Headphones (these improve sound quality and cut background noise, making it easier to concentrate).

4) A phone you will have access to during the class (this is a back-up in case of any technical issues).

In some circumstances it might be possible to do tutoring over the phone – please ask.

From time to time you might need to miss a class. I don’t offer refunds, but if you give me at least 24 hours notice I will schedule a make-up session within two weeks of the missed class.

Of course you are free to withdraw from tutoring at any time, and any unused payments will be refunded.

I follow the Victorian Government school holidays.

It may be possible to arrange tutoring during the holidays, just ask.
